Margaret
Donaldson, ASID: Founder and Principal
Margaret Donaldson opened the doors of MDI in 1988. With an interior
design degree from the University of Georgia, she stepped out to
create what would prove to be one of Charleston’s most respected
interior design firms.
A Charleston native, Margaret absorbed the Holy City’s underlying
style and class. That, coupled with her discerning eye and education,
makes Margaret a remarkable designer. Always beginning with a discovery
of the client’s desire, her projects pair the elements of
design with an emphasis on function, thereby creating spaces that
are not only beautiful, but livable. Known for layering colors and
textures, her work conveys a sense of balance and distinctiveness.
There’s a subtle elegance and order to the design. The design
does not feel over decorated or contrived but as though it is the
consequence of an inspired vision.
Margaret’s work ranges from a 19th century plantation to
resort condominiums and from an upscale retirement community to
a lively orthodontist's office. An advocate for preservation, her
work on the renovation of an historic kitchen house received national
recognition on HGTV’s “Interiors by Design.” As
the interior designer for Southern Living’s Idea House on
Daniel Island, Margaret again gained national attention and reaffirmed
MDI’s position as a leading design firm.
Margaret has
brought together a team that sees each new project as an opportunity
to bring life and design together. “Life happens in our spaces,
whether it is a family’s home or a commercial space that reaches
more people, maybe even just for a moment.” The ultimate goal
is to reflect the lifestyle of the people who interact within the
space.
